PhD Project Title: Modelling filaments produced by magnetically confined plasmas
I have spent four years at the University of Exeter studying for MMath in Mathematics. My final year project focused on the topic of dynamo theory, an area of astrophysical fluid dynamics which studies magnetic field generation through motion of electrically conducting fluids. I specifically studied fundamental mechanisms for dynamo action and carried out numerical simulations of kinematic dynamos for simple spatially periodic flows.
My research interests lie largely in the field of astrophysical and geophysical fluid dynamics. I am interested in developing numerical models as well as analytical calculations/approximations of models or very idealised problems.
What appeals to me and why I chose to apply to CDT in Leeds is the integrated nature of the programme and the specific focus on fluid dynamics. The MSc phase will allow me to develop a firm grounding in the area of fluid dynamics and at the same time gain essential research, programming and experimental skills before beginning the PhD phase.
